WVIAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPS!
(CHARLESTON)---Wheeling Jesuit (28-9) avenged a regular season defeat to West Virginia State (25-4) as the Cardinals captured the WVIAC Volleyball Tournament championship with a four-set victory.
WJU compiled a .281 hitting percentage as they snapped a four-year streak of losing in the championship match. Caitlin Carey led the Cards with 16 kills, while tournament MVP Catie Halberstadt added 13. Keysha Allison had 18 digs and six blocks and Emily Borchers ended with 12 kills and eight blocks.
State overcame six set points as they rallied for a 30-28 win in the opener. However, it was all WJU from that point. The Cards jumped to a 7-1 lead in the second set and held State at arm's length to even the match with a 25-21 victory.
A 5-0 burst midway through the third set allowed Wheeling Jesuit to open up a 13-7 edge as the Cardinals grabbed a 2-1 lead in the match after a 25-16 triumph. Set four was all WJU. The Cardinals built leads of 4-0, 14-6, and 23-12 as they closed out the match with a 25-14 victory.
"Both teams came out strong," stated a pleased Wheeling Jesuit head coach Christy Benner. "We made some adjustments in our blocking and picking up their tips. Our middles were outstanding. The blocking really made the difference today."
Wheeling Jesuit, which entered the tournament ranked second in the Atlantic Region, earns an automatic bid to next week's regional tournament. West Virginia State, the seventh ranked squad in the region, is also expected to earn a spot in the regional. Nationally ranked California (PA) is the likely host for next week's event. The NCAA will release pairings for the Atlantic Regional on Sunday.
If current regional rankings hold up, the Cardinals and Jackets could have a rematch as early as Thursday evening. "We know them, they know us", stated Benner regarding a possible third contest of the season versus WVSU. "It would definitely be a hard fought battle with two very good teams."
