Organization and Design
The Professional Education/Teacher Preparation program is designed so that students begin major courses in the sophomore year after completing initial university core requirements (including PSY 110). Please refer to the catalogue for a list of core requirements. Formal admission into the PED/TPP occurs in the second semester of the sophomore year. The student must pass a state (WDVE) based writing assessment at the conclusion of PED/TPP 231 (Professional Education I) and take the ETS, Praxis I series Pre Professional Skills Test (PPST) exam in the Spring semester of the sophomore year. The student must obtain an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher prior to registration for PED/TPP 232 (Professional Education II).

The first professional education course (PED/TPP 231) is taken in the Fall of the sophomore year and includes the first of many field components. At the end of the sophomore year, all students seeking certification are encouraged to join a professional teaching organization (e.g. NCTM, NCTE, etc.) in PED/TPP 232. Likewise, students must pass the Praxis II prior to student teaching in the senior year.

LSEE students who meet all program requirements, but do not pass the Praxis Series exams are eligible for a BA in Liberal Studies; this may be accomplished with or without completing student teaching as long as the 131 credit hour degree requirement is met. Should these students later pursue certification, they would be subject to the student teaching and Praxis testing requirements of their state of residence and possibly additional university coursework to obtain initial certification.  Students completing all degree requirements, including student teaching, are awarded the University degree of Liberal Studies in Elementary Education degree even if they do not pass the Praxis Series tests.

Major/Licensure Field(s)

Theology majors are welcome to complete the Teacher Preparation Program, however no state licensure is available for theology majors.

The Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and multi-categorical special education (SLD, BD, MI) endorsements are not stand-alone programs but are earned in conjunction with one of the licenses listed above. Students completing K-6 Multi-Subjects programs may earn a K-Adult multi-categorical or SLD endorsement while 5-Adult Content Specialization licensees may add a 5-Adult multi-categorical or SLD endorsement. The addition of the multi-categorical or SLD endorsement requires careful course scheduling during the student’s four year program and may result in additional hours beyond the typical load.

All secondary students complete a full major in addition to the Professional Education/Teacher Preparation Program. All PED/TPP students should seek scheduling advice from the PED/TPP faculty early in their programs. PED/TPP students should maintain 16-18 credit hours per semester beginning with the freshman year.

Professional Education/Teacher Preparation students complete coursework in three areas: the core curriculum, the major, and the professional education component. The core curriculum and requirements for each major are available in the course catalogue. Students should note the PSY 110 fulfills both core and professional education requirements. Some secondary licensure programs may necessitate additional content courses that are not currently requirements of the major. Students may receive specific course lists from a PED/TPP advisor or the Director of the PED/TPP program.

Students considering Profession Education/Teacher Preparation should attend a program orientation in the freshman year and enroll in PED/TPP 231 during the fall semester of the sophomore year. Formal application to the program is made in the second semester of the sophomore year during enrollment in PED/TPP 232. Applicants must possess and subsequently maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 overall. Additional program requirements include a 2.5 minimum GPA in the major, a “B” level mastery of all PED/TPP and psychology courses and successful completion of required Praxis Series testing through the Educational Testing Service (ETS). A detailed outline of specific requirements is available in the Professional Education/Teacher PreparationHandbook.

Most PED/TPP courses include a lab experience in local schools as an integral component. When scheduling classes, students should consider this requirement and allocate an appropriate block of time.

*All LSEE and secondary PED/TPP students must pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test with West Virginia minimums to be permitted to register for 300 through 400 level PED/TPP courses.

Students seeking Special Education certification may follow one of two tracks for either elementary or a secondary subject specialization additional endorsement: Specific Learning Disabilities certification -or- Multi-Categorical certification. While the coursework is the same for both tracks, field experiences will be specific to the chosen track with the Multi-Categorical certification track having field experience in behavior disorders, learning disabilities and mild mental impairments and the Specific Learning Disabilities track having all field experiences in learning disabilities.
