The profession of teaching contains a body of knowledge that is best learned through focused observation and supervised practice.

To provide students with practical experience, Wheeling Jesuit University’s Professional Education Department/Teacher Preparation Program begins to offer students field experience during the sophomore year. Students observe teachers, work directly with students and plan and teach lessons as a part of the field experiences. Students have a variety of placements that will allow them to experience many of the diverse public and private educational opportunities in the Wheeling area. Students complete a full semester of student teaching in a Wheeling area school during their senior year.

Additionally, students take part in activities at the NASA Classroom of the Future and the Challenger Learning Center, both part of the Erma Ora Byrd Center for Educational Technologies located on campus.
