Careers/Job Opportunities

Career opportunities with the major: Entry Level Research Physicist (government and private industry) Engineering Physics, Engineering Planetarium Director, Space Scientist, Optical Engineer, Government Employee (Research & Development), High School Science Teacher (with teacher certification), Sales Representative, Management. Long Term Career Development With advanced degree: College or University Professor, Research Astronomer, Research and Development, Computer and Electronics Engineering, Health Physicist Industrial Administrator Plant Manager, to name just a few.

Students seeking employment after earning a BS degree in physics from WJU have a wide variety of opportunities because of the diverse nature of the physics program. There are many opportunities to work in modern industries in either applied physics or engineering-physics. Physicists can find employment in research or design, in quality control or testing, in mathematical and computer modeling and also in sales of technical equipment. In the medical field, a physicist may supervise the operation of a multitude of clinical instruments found in a hospital or assist in diagnosis and therapy using nuclear radiation, x-ray and ultrasound techniques. Health physics is a growing area where many employment opportunities exist. It is not at all uncommon for physicists and engineers to be found working side by side. Physicists tend to be highly trained in three different areas, namely, experimental techniques, mathematical analysis, and computation. This training enables physicists to be very flexible and adaptable and makes them highly sought after.

Further information about careers with physics can be found at the American Institute of Physics.
