Mission Statement

The Department of Modern Languages introduces students to foreign languages and cultures. The various courses offered enable students to lay the groundwork for fluency in a foreign tongue and to enhance practical language skills for specific career purposes. Students may elect to major in Romance Languages, which combines the study of French and Spanish, or to major in French or Spanish. The department also offers a minor in either French or Spanish. We seek to educate students in the Jesuit tradition to become more effective participants in the global community of the twenty-first century by promoting awareness and sensitivity to other languages and cultures. The Department of Modern Languages fulfills its mission by teaching foreign languages, cultures and literatures, by promoting cross-cultural awareness and understanding, and by presenting models of effective pedagogy. Members of the Department also serve the University and the outside community in areas pertaining to foreign languages.

The Modern Language Faculty encourages students to move beyond a monolingual and cultural paradigm through teaching and co-curricular activities. It is also invaluable for those seeking careers in business, medical professions, education, international affairs, media, social services, law enforcement, and scholarly research to name just some of the professions in which language skill is beneficial.

The Department expects students to develop their proficiency in a foreign language by focusing on the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Content area courses serve the purpose of improving upon skills, broadening cultural knowledge and gaining a deeper understanding of history, politics, art and geography.

The Department has major programs in French and Spanish, as well as in Romance Languages, which allows students to combine the two foreign languages. The Department also offers minor programs in French and Spanish. The multimedia language lab provides authentic language models and enhances foreign language acquisition through the use of current technology. Students also have opportunities to experience study abroad, participate in language clubs and organizations and to gain skills while participating in an internship. The goals of the Department of Modern Languages are:
