The Modern Language Faculty encourages students to move beyond a monolingual and cultural paradigm through teaching and co-curricular activities. It is also invaluable for those seeking careers in business, medical professions, education, international affairs, media, social services, law enforcement, and scholarly research to name just some of the professions in which language skill is beneficial.

The Department expects students to develop their proficiency in a foreign language by focusing on the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Content area courses serve the purpose of improving upon skills, broadening cultural knowledge and gaining a deeper understanding of history, politics, art and geography.

The Department has major programs in French and Spanish, as well as in Romance Languages, which allows students to combine the two foreign languages. The Department also offers minor programs in French and Spanish. The multimedia language lab provides authentic language models and enhances foreign language acquisition through the use of current technology. Students also have opportunities to experience study abroad, participate in language clubs and organizations and to gain skills while participating in an internship.
